Step aside, Jonas Brothers; there’s a new heartthrob in town, 16-year-old pop artist, Justin Bieber. His two albums, My World and My World 2.0, are filled with simplistic, cookie-cutter pop music. Along with cliched lyrics and synthesized tones, My World is a lack of musical talent. However, hiding behind his whiny voice, there is potential for improvement. For now, Bieber will have to use his boyish charm to scam the hearts of teens to achieve success. “I prefer looking at him to listening to him—and not by much,” said high school student, Collin Gifford.
Bieber, a Canadian-born singer, found his rise to fame on YouTube. Starting at only 12 years old, Bieber uploaded videos, which started getting major hits. Eventually, he was discovered by Scooter Brawn, a former marketing executive, who flew him to Atlanta to perform for Usher, following the performance, Bieber got signed to Island Records.
Both albums feature “Baby”, a ballad featuring rapper Ludacris. “[Ludacris and I] both live in Atlanta. I met him a year prior to this and we figured it was a perfect collaboration for him, so we invited him out to do it,” said Bieber, on the initial collaboration of the song. Much like his other songs, the tone has an R&B feel with a hint of fifties pop.
The song begins with Bieber proclaiming his love for this girl he likes, and how he would do anything for her. The song transforms into a highly repetitive chorus, leaving you to wonder if your iPod is skipping. Although being repetitive, the song is extremely catchy, leaving an annoying buzz resonating in one’s ear all day long.
Rapper, Ludacris comes in with a rap detailing his life as a 13-year-old. “He’s talking about [how] he’s mad that his girl left him and he still cares for her. As soon as I heard it I knew it was a hit, I just had to figure out how I could get on a record with a 15-year-old. So I sat there and said, ‘Let me reminisce on the past,’ and that’s basically how I stepped on the record. And I guarantee you; mark my word, that’s going to be one of the biggest songs of the year 2010.”
“Baby” has already become one of the top songs of 2010; reaching number 5 on the Billboard Hot 100. However, Bieber still has yet to prove to the world that he isn’t another Aaron Carter.
