The Gilbert High School boys volleyball training team, also known as the JV B team is unlike any of the other teams. The team is special because the athletes on the team only play several games a season and only have two practices a week. JV B coach, Josh Turley, expresses that their goal for the season is to improve upon each aspect of the game, so that the trainees will have the ability to make the JV team next year. So far, the training team has proven useful for male volleyball athletes willing to learn and practice in hopes of making the JV team. Six of the athletes from last year’s training team are currently on the junior varsity team.
“The purpose of this team is to get to know the rules and techniques of the game,” says Varsity coach Jeff Grover. This training team in particular consists mostly of freshman, or athletes that are somewhat new to the game of volleyball. Junior Alex Yount, says that his skills and techniques have improved, and that he is happy that he received a spot on the JV B team.
As a training team these athletes go through a series of workouts that train individual skills pertaining to the game. These include the basics of passing, serving, hitting, blocking and other pertinent volleyball knowledge. Without this training, some may not have had the opportunity to even make the Junior Varsity team.
“It has helped us to keep volleyball going,” says Grover. Hopefully it will be able to do just that this year in preparation for the years to come.”
