Gilbert Junior Varsity Softball defeated Dobson at home on March 26 11-10. Two consecutive errors by the Lady Tigers resulted in a two run lead for Dobson. The Tigers spent no time getting back at Dobson, earning four runs by the end of the second inning to take the lead.
In the top of the third inning, Dobson scored three more runs to momentarily take the lead 5-4. However, Gilbert retaliated, and earned four runs in the bottom of the third ending the inning with Gilbert leading 8-5.
The only offense in the fourth and fifth innings were a couple of stolen bases by Gilbert pitcher Adria Vigna’s, but to no avail as the Dobson defense held their ground. However, the pace of the game did pick up in the top of the sixth inning, as Dobson scored five runs to leave the score 10 -8, with Dobson finally taking a true lead since the first inning.
With Gilbert down two runs to tie in the bottom of the last inning, the Tigers rallied to pull together and defeat Dobson. The first two batters hit directly into left field, immediately allowing Dobson two easy outs. However, it didn’t take long for the Tigers to get players on first and third base, which gained them a run quickly thereafter. With runners on first and third, Gilbert stole second allowing left fielder Elyse Kelso to drive the hit that allowed both players in a walk-off hit. The final score 11-10.
Post-game, Freshman Adria states, “My pitching was good but I wasn’t as on as I wish I would have been.”
Couch Louie Ortiz complimented the team on their determination. “I told them [in the dug-out] that we were down, but the game isn’t over until the last out.” Though he and the team were excited for the win, he says the team needs to work on “defense and the mental part of the game.” The next game is on Tuesday, April 6, where Gilbert JV takes on Mountain View at home.
